The Genius

GZA, born Gary Grice on August 22, 1966, in Brooklyn, New York, is a founding member of the Wu-Tang Clan and is widely regarded as one of hip-hop’s most cerebral lyricists. Known as “The Genius,” GZA earned his nickname for his sharp intellect, intricate wordplay, and ability to weave complex concepts into his lyrics. Before Wu-Tang formed, GZA began his rap career under the name The Genius, releasing his debut album, Words from the Genius (1991), which showcased his early talent for storytelling and thought-provoking themes.

GZA’s contribution to the Wu-Tang Clan was instrumental in shaping the group’s distinctive sound and philosophy. He played a key role in the conceptual development of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (1993), helping to establish the gritty, martial-arts-inspired aesthetic that became the group’s signature. While the Clan’s other members explored solo projects, GZA released his landmark solo album, Liquid Swords (1995), which is widely celebrated as one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time.
